Going in for surgery tomorrow, right? Just wanted to wish you lots of strength and hope. As a wise man once said (Dave), "Onward we go!"

    Zanne,

Thanks so much and thanks to everyone who has private-messaged me with kind wishes.

Tomorrow I'm going in for lumbar disc replacement. Hopefully this will be the beginning of the end of a very long road. Chronic pain sucks, and hopefully this will take care of business.

    >fingers crossed<

If your pain is not controlled, let the doctors and nurses know every time you see them. The squeaky wheel gets oiled. If they give youa button with a dispenser, make sure you have someone there to wake you to push the button every 12 minutes or however many minutes longer than that which will control your pain. You can't lay there for 4 hours sleeping and wake up and push the button and expect pain control. It is not possible. I was alone and was having fights with nurses to please wake me so that I could push the button.

Well, I'm back. No pun intended.

The hospital was top-notch. The rooms were single-occupancy, and mine had french doors that opened to a private 2nd-story balcony overlooking some trees. The nurses actually responded within 2 minutes of ringing the call button, and the food was actually palatable. I couldn't complain at all with the hospital, staff, or surgeons for that matter. It was like a medical utopia and everyone working there knew it and took pride in making it perfect. There was even an extra bed for a guest. Since my sister is an RN, she stayed in the room with me for the first couple of nights to help smooth the transition of getting a new disc implanted into my spine.

The pain was pretty significant, but within 2 days I was back to my regular meds, where I still am. Overall, the procedure was far less painful than the stupid intradiscal injections I had at the Spinal Diagnostics center in Daly City, CA. After I had those injections I couldn't walk for 3 weeks because of pain, but after this disc replacement surgery, I was able to reasonably move around after 4-5 days.

Now I'm just laying about, lethargic and sleepy. Thinking healing thoughts. Its too soon to tell if it helped or not, but it is nice to be back home.

          Thanks for asking :-)

Awesome! I am 8 weeks after the multi-level fusion with screws and all that jazz and am jut beginning to be rid of my barbaric surgical pain - still on Oxycontin 40mg per day. Start outpatient PT tomorrow. Not using walker anymore. Several months to go before returning to normal it seems.
