Been doing Prolotherapy

topic posted Thu, October 4, 2007 - 9:25 AM by  Nops

I've been going through Prolotherapy to treat a problem with my low back that I have been struggling with for years. The injections occur every 2-3 weeks, and I just had injection #6 two weeks ago.

In a nutshell, the theory behind Prolotherapy is to use the process of inflammation to encourage strong-tissue growth (some call it scar tissue, some say technically, it's not) for strengthening injured areas. This is done by injecting sugar water into weak or damaged soft-tissue areas to start inflammation. As someone stated in an earlier thread about Prolo, not everyone believes in it.

For me, there have been tangible events where I felt the benefits from the Prolo. Unfortunately, it hasn't been exactly a smooth ride.

One bummer about it is that it hurts. Sometimes, pretty bad. At first I thought, 'hey, there will be pain with or without Prolo,' but there is something about voluntarily walking into a procedure where this much discomfort for weeks on end is a given. It seems now that just by association I get a little depressed just by being in that waiting room.

Another bummer is that after the injections and during the inflammation (which lasts about 3 weeks for me), you can't use ice or any anti-inflammatory (advil, motrin, naproxen, ect) to treat pain because they reduce inflammation. For me, this means prescription Narcotics, paranoia about dependence, limited activities (can't drive, ect).

As far as pain goes, my experience has been this: once the pain from the last injections wear off, its time for the next set of injections. Yippie!

As for beneficial results, the last time I went to my Osteopath, my back was thrown out of alignment everywhere except where the injections have been. This was encouraging since the injections have all been in my low back's weakest spots and suggests that the area is being strengthened as result. However, when the pain is bad, I struggle trying to remember how I came to determine this was all going to be worth it.

It has been a roller coaster.

      nops,
it's SO good to hear about your experience. i've been searching for someone who's trying prolo for ages! all the reports say, <<it's painless! it's painless!>> riiiight, that's what they've said before all of those killer painful procedures. <<well, some people do feel a bit of discomfort!>>

      achk!

anyway hang in there - this part is just temporary, any relief will be permanent! good on ya - my best hopes are yours.

I have had prolo with some benefit. Hope it works well for you..Please check out IMS therapy and my postings about it. In 2 months and 7 treatments my narcotic intake is down from 80 mg per day to only 20 and I am going to try to go to zero intake. I will also try to get my disabled status reversed. IMS has been a miracle for me. The website is www.istop.org. I strongly encourage you to try it. My treatments are given by a physiotherapist with my doctors approval...best wishes..john.

I had prolo and it was awful.

It was a huge mistake for me and I wish I had never let that Santa Barbara/Daly City monster inject me with anything.

I am so glad your experiences have been different.

What happened? An experience I had was going thru a number of referrals and finally getting to see the top back/nerve doctor/specialist in this area. He had diplomas for wallpaper including a few from Sanford and johns Hopkins. I liked him and was impressed by his knowledge BUT the best he came up with was to cut some of nerves in my sacral and tailbone area. He assured me I would feel much less pain. I refused the operation because he could not tell me what was wrong-what the problem was..He told me he did not know what the pain cause was but could only offer pain reduction. I am now very happy that I declined because about 2 years later found IMS (www.istop.org) which explained my problem AND provided a solution.. I know I sound like a stuck record but PLEASE check it out. And best of luck to you.

    wow
someone who actually really did it. thank you, thank you.
I researched prolo and posted a query here, but at that time no one had experienced it. It sounded promissing (depending on the doc) but I did not get it.
It's nice to know your story.
    Thanks

I have three herniated discs, one in each section of spine.
No injections or root block or surgery was worth the pain it caused and showed no lasting benefits.
only acupuncture has been any help,
life is crazy pain. everyday. I think the prolo made things worse.

i take heavy meds and have many side effects in common with our dear O.P.and that's no way to live. I'm going to see the person who can help me. I believe I can get well with a specialist's help and hollistic medicine, and lots of hard work and careful nutrition.

        and a good support group.

the doc who did the prolo is the only doctor I've seen who has ever heard of it. I've seen doctor's on both coasts since then.

Prolo was recommended to me to treat pain from a ruptured disc (L5S1). I did not respond to facet blocks or Steroid injections in my lumbar area or SI joint area. Once my legs started giving out I had a feeling it was time for a different approach.

2 neurosurgeons later I find I'm not a good candidate for back surgery since I'm hyper mobile (double jointed) and also have the complication of SI joint dysfunction. This is what led me to Prolo.

As a side note, I will put in a plug for an awesome back surgeon in the San Francisco Bay Area (Castro) named Dr. Brian Andrews. I think he's actually the chair of neurosurgery at his medical group and affiliated with UCSF. Straight shooter. He did say prolo was not recognized as an 'official' remedy but that he had other patients get relief from it.

So, for me, the prolo injections seemed to me like a good non-surgical alternative to strengthen the area around my ruptured disc.

2 days ago I had injection series #7. There were 16 needles poked into various parts of my spine. Ouch.

At least one day I'll look back and say how it was all worth it......right? ;-)

          I'm not sure Nops.

I didn't. Acupuncture helps. Those needles work for me and I feel it right away. I also get the best sleep I ever get while layed-out and pinned down.

I think cutting us up or injections of unnatural things isn't the answer -- at least for me.

I'm worried for you. I truly hope it is your answer, or at least a real help to you. One of my 3 herniated discs is L5S1.
take good care of you, I think confidence in my medical care is important, but I have gone into too many things hopeful, with wrongly placed confidence in things I now regret.

Yes! It will all be worth it, Nops. Ok, of course, there is no way I can know that, but I reckon that keeping the hope alive cannot hurt much. I don't say that lightly - I have a whole new appreciation for the phrase, "it can't hurt" - but I reckon HOPING will hurt much less than alot of other things out there. For me, hope alone has proven to be a strong medicine and I only hope (see, I'm a very hopeful person) that it can and will for you, too.

The pain makes us stronger in the end, so may your strength be multiplied while your pain is diminished. May you also find courage and peace during this trying process. You will make it through this because you are a warrior now.

          kindly,
          Zanne

I had the Facet surgery done too. it lasted 2 months and I Was back in the same boat. I am not convinced that prolo is for me but I am seeing that I am using more and more narcotic to maintain these days. something is getting worse so its back to the doc no pun intended.
am still looking for something to create the relief. have had puncture pressure chiro etc.. nothing is working yet. only thing that creates the illusion of functionality is the morphine. Fortunately I have a doc that is understanding.

          Tatt.
